Firestation Trip Summary - Daniel, Shakaia, Te Wai, Nazella

Daniel, Shakaia, Te Wai and I made summary of how firefighters keep us safe. We worked collaboratively to find the six most important words, then write a summary. Firefighters are first-responders meaning they are the first people who will come to you if there is an emergency. They are trained to help people, not only from our community but others. 

Summarizing - Troublesome Jones

 

In reading, we have been learning how to summarize a text. To help Mia and I summarize, we chose 20 words that were important. We then chose 6 words that was vital. With these 6 words, we wrote sentences that summed up the text. This skill will help me in reading tests because I am able to summarize a text quickly. 

Tamaki College Overdrive

Today LS2 were exploring the Tamaki College Overdrive. This is where we are allowed to borrow books for free, then read it in your browser. I like reading in the Tamaki College Overdrive because you are able to find great books that you have never heard of. 

Suffragette Movement Sketchnote

Mia and I made an online sketch note using google drawing, based on our learning about the Suffrage Movement. We made a sketch note to make connections with our learning and to show what we have learned. Learning conversations helped us learn from our partner. It was definitely an important skill for this activity. 

Kate Sheppard - Mia, Jorja and Nazella

Mia, Jorja and I researched about Kate Sheppard. Kate Sheppard is the Suffragette Movement leader. 124 years ago, the movement was created so that women were able to vote in elections etc. The Suffragette's finally achieved this in 1893, but Kate Sheppard still wanted to protest for women.

Kate Sheppard and the Suffragettes - Summary

Mia, Javeylor, Zahra, Mishaan and I made a 25 word summary about what the Suffragette Movement was. The Suffragette Movement was a campaign created for a right to vote as women since they weren't allowed to. It was difficult making the 25 word summary, because we couldn't fit everything in, but we managed, by talking with each other and discussing what was important and what wasn't in the summary. 

Why is it so important to keep oral story telling alive?

Maori storytellers believe these stories have been forgotten and lost in dust, they are trying to keep their culture, beliefs and language alive for tomorrow.

Today, Brooklyn and I worked collaboratively making a 25 word summary based on the question: Why is it so important to keep oral story telling alive? We watched YouTube videos and looked for the main message in the videos. Then we made our 25 word summary, it was difficult because we couldn't add everything inside the summary. To get around this problem, we had a few learning conversations which helped us agree and disagree.  

How Maui Slowed Down The Sun - Myths and Legends

This week, LS2 were focusing on myths and legends. In this activity, Brooklyn and I made a storyboardthat based on a scene from the myth 'How Maui slowed down the Sun'. We completed this activity to learn how to use dialogue to show not tell what is happening in this scene. It was challenging because we couldn't find the background which could suit the scene. To cope with this difficulty, I changed the background colour to make it look dark as if it were night. It was fun exploring this website because I don't 

Landfills Movie - Fifita, Mia, Zahra, and Nazella

In reading Mia, Fifita, Zahra and I made a movie based on landfills. The movie talked about how long it takes for rubbish to break down. It was interesting because plastic bottles never break down. We should be more careful about the waste we are throwing out because if we don't we will end up with so many landfills scattered around New Zealand.          

Maui Haiku - Poetry

This is the Haiku that Brooklyn and I made. A Haiku is a Japanese traditional poem. Haiku poems have three lines in each verse, the first and last line has 5 syllables, while the middle line has 7 syllables. A syllable is like a chunk, you can find a syllable by clapping out the word. Eg: Be-cause. 

Language Features - Poetry

Yesterday we were looking at the language features in a poem. We were focusing on verbs, synonyms and metaphors.  

Samoan Language Week - Main Idea

Since it is Samoan Language Week, Mrs Anderson created some activities about Samoa's traditions/culture. For this activity, we listened to a speech by Mata'afa Elia Autagavaia talking about how we should preserve the old traditions of the Samoan dances, and to tell the next generation how to correctly dance in Samoa.  

Main Ideas - Recycling

In reading, we watched a video based on recycling. After watching the video we were told to figure out which idea was vital, very important or just important. After watching this video, I was convinced one of the vital ideas was to put the correct items into the recycling bin, aswell as clean items since it could get the workers sick. 

Summarizing

In reading we were focusing on how to summarize. A summary is like a shorter version of a text. We read an article called, "Eco Rangers Save The Planet". After reading parts of the text, we wrote down 20 important words from the text, then we lowered it down to 6, then created a short summary using them.

Is Recycling Really Helping Our World?

We were asked, is recycling really helping our world? This padlet shows our knowledge before reading any texts or information about the topic, this is called prior knowledge. After gathering all of our information, we will synthesis. This is when we gather all of our information and make it into one big idea. 

Ivory Trade Ban - China Current Events

In this activity we were looking at current events, in particular the ban of ivory in China. China is planning to ban ivory trades by the end of 2017. They are doing this because they are trying to prevent elephant extinction from happening. To ban ivory trades, they are closing down 24 factories and 128 shops. I feel as if this is a good thing, but at the same time a bad thing, since tons of people would lose their job. 

Multimodel Reading

This week for reading, we were looking at the Kuaka's migration. We got put into groups, in my group Gozan, Harry, Lathem, Cecillia, AJ, Lyndon, Breeana and me. We used our prior knowledge to talk about what transport we use to get overseas today, 30 years ago and 100 years ago.

For reading, we have been focusing on the four structures in reading. Scaffold text, complimentary text, challenge text and self selected text. For our second activity we had to make a facts sheet about the Wright brothers. 

Main Idea - Wright Brothers

Today we were learnt four structures that are in a text. These are scaffold text, complimentary text, challenge text and self selected text. We read about the wright brothers using the scaffold of the four structures. The scaffold is the structure which you build up your knowledge with facts etc. We then made a DLO about the main idea about the text using the facts.
